Caitlyn Jenner’s coming out via Vanity Fair and the ensuing national conversation has triggered some foolish responses from Catholic clergy.
With the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) meeting in Baltimore approaching next week, most attention has been on whether the bishops will approve a controversial document on the Eucharist. But there will also be some key committee chair elections occurring, and candidates include some of the most LGBTQ-negative church leaders in the U.S.
Queer Eye, Netflix’s television series where five gay men provide life makeovers for clients in often dramatic ways, is, in one reviewer’s words, “probably the strongest and most vivid representation currently on display in popular culture of how grace works.”
LGBT topics were discussed at the synod press briefing on Saturday, the same day that the third set of reports from the small group discussion groups were released which also contained some references to LGBT issues. Overall, it doesn’t look like the synod has pushed the needle on LGBT issues very far.

At yesterday’s synod press briefing, Bishop Robert Barron said, “”The church’s first move in regard to everybody,” including gay and lesbian people “is to reach out and say just that, ‘You’re a beloved child of God.’ ” But that’s not all he said.
