Rainbow Flag Outside Catholic Church Vandalized During Pride Event

A 58-year old man in Mannheim, Germany was arrested for sawing off a 30-foot flagpole containing a Pride flag outside a Catholic Church, reported Katholisch.de. 

The flag had been displayed by St. Sebastian Catholic Church to mark Monnem Pride, the largest queer event in the Rhine-Neckar region of Germany. [“Monnem” is the German name local people use for Mannheim.] This year was the third year the Church of St. Sebastian participated in the festivities, alongside other Christian denominations. The theme of this year’s Pride event was ““Love is good for the soul – hate is harmful to the soul.” 

Although no one was hurt, the flagpole crashed into the market square in front of the church. Multiple witnesses saw the destructive act, and one person alerted the police. The suspect was arrested, but no motive has been discovered yet.

The senior pastor of the parish, Father Lukas Glocker, had initiated the raising of the rainbow flag as a way to promote solidarity with marginalized groups. “The flag makes visible that every person, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, origin, religion, appearance or skin color, should be treated with respect and respect,” he stated to reporters. “Rainbow flags in front of our churches are therefore a visible sign of an attitude that all people are treated with respect and respect.”

In a statement, the parish leadership team explained that the community participated in Pride  to show “that we stand for diversity, humanity, and neighborly love, which nourishes the soul. We are convinced that hatred, exclusion, and denigration harm the soul and also damage our relationships with one another.” 

This act of vandalism preceded a recent terror attack in Germany, where a man drove a van into a crowd at Berlin Pride. A Polish woman was killed, and around thirty people were injured. The suspect, a German national, was killed after a 24-hour manhunt and confrontation with the police.
