Archbishop Nichols Explains Endorsement of Civil Partnerships

Yesterday, we posted a piece on  how the  Catholic Bishops of England and Wales have endorsed civil partnerships for lesbian and gay couples.  In an interview with Catholic News Agency,  Archbishop Vincent Nichols, of Westminster, explains the rationale for such an endorsement.

I am very pleased to hear this!!! This is perhaps the most positive statement concerning gay marriage/civil unions I’ve ever heard coming from a Catholic bishop! Why can’t any of the U.S. bishops take this approach? I don’t understand why the Church will not even discuss civil unions or domestic partnerships. Why do they teach about the wholeness and human dignity of all persons, yet they reduce GLBT persons down to sexual acts? It makes no sense. I applaud this Archbishop for being open, honest and speaking his mind on this issue! It makes me sick how the Vatican forces uniformity on everyone and suppression of intellect with no respect to ‘agree to disagree’ on these issues. In my view, this uniformity leads to stagnation, unity through diversity leads to growth and progress.
