St. John of the Cross wrote several religious poems,
one of them entitled The Dark Night of the Soul. It
begins with the words, “One dark night, fired by love’s
urgent longings – Ah, the sheer grace – I went out unseen, the house being now all stilled.” He saw this
longing for love in the depths of our being as the
source of all that is spiritual within us. The retreat day
will call us to grow in our spiritual relationship with
God and creation.
